JCY Senior leader
How did you get this role?
Something didn't feel right about starting another year in mainstream. There were too many ‘initiatives’ that didn’t really have a heart for learning but a data-driven, scientific approach. My wife found On Track on a jobs website and told me to apply. I did. Got the job. And didn’t look back.
What’s your typical working day like?
A strong blend of routine tasks, predictable new challenges, appropriately stretched thinking, and some of the most wonderfully unpredictable, indescribable goings on that keep me on my toes at all times.
What’s your favourite thing about working at On Track?
The working atmosphere with all staff is encouraging, challenging and cohesive. The students do so well as a direct result of the willing care staff give to all areas of their role.
How would you describe the team culture?
Really caring and supportive. Everyone is there for everyone else. We are not a tribe of individuals but a cohesive unit that has a drive towards a shared vision.
Has there been a moment where you stopped and thought – this is why I’m here?
Yes - I love my job!
What impact do you feel you’ve made on the young people you work with?
Challenging staff to dive out of their comfort zone, creating lessons that are pitched right where the students need them to be and reassuring students that they can face the difficulties of life with confidence and courage.
What’s the most rewarding part of your role?
The times when my curiosity and thinking lead to an idea that may or may not work, but turns out to not only work for a student but also helps staff to use that way of thinking to create their own original ideas.
What’s your superpower?
Focusing on where and when to be subjective and where and when to be objective. I feel that I am good at knowing what needs clarity and structure and what needs flexibility and understanding.
How has On Track supported your professional development?
Two major NPQ qualifications, a whole host of specialist SEN training and endless curiosity and expertise from all areas of the staffing team.
What advice would you give to someone considering applying?
Be calm, be stoic, be ready.
What makes On Track different from other places you’ve worked?
A true understanding of what it means to learn in an individualised way that blends structure and routine with tailored flexibility.
Anything else you would want someone to know about working at On Track?
It really is a great place to work. There is a strong, supportive atmosphere where everyone is valued and has a welcome part to play in our shared vision for the students.
